Isoz Jegerlehner
OUR STORYFROM 1892 TO TODAY
Our story begins in 1892 when Frédéric Jegerlehner, an ambitious young man from Bern, opened a bakery and patisserie in Sierre, at the heart of Valais.
Between 1910 and 1915, his son, Frédéric Samuel, practising the same profession, went abroad to perfect his craft at the most prestigious establishments, including in New York, London, Sanremo, Paris, Brussels, Stuttgart, Montreux and Saint-Moritz.
The experience gained during this journey proved most rewarding, helping to establish the business's reputation throughout the region.
Throughout his life, he formed friendships with many artists such as Edmond Bille, Paul Monnier and Charles-Clos Olsommer. He also had the honour of associating with the poet Rainer Maria Rilke.
Surrounded by the many works acquired over the years by Frédéric Samuel, Jacques-Louis Isoz, his only grandson, in turn developed a passion for painting. Yet despite his desire to devote himself entirely to art history, he chose to continue the family adventure.
He studied at the INBP in Rouen, a leading institution in the field of bakery and pastry-making.
At 25, he was able to satisfy his passion by opening a gallery above the family tearoom, quickly attracting recognised artists and a discerning public.
The counsel of many artists and art world professionals, visits to the finest museums in Europe and the United States, and the study of countless reference works made him an enlightened connoisseur.
Over the years, he developed a consuming passion for pastel and for the 18th century, the period when this medium enjoyed its golden age. For 40 years, he patiently built what became the finest private collection of old pastels in Europe.
Unfortunately, a serious accident forced him to give up his profession. He then turned to teaching, sharing his knowledge with young pastry-confectioners and giving art history lessons to future decorators.
It was thus that he met a student as passionate about art as about chocolate. During lessons, she copied works by the 18th-century masters, with a special fondness for the Swiss pastellist Jean-Etienne Liotard. She did not know then that her teacher was a great admirer of this artist and owned several of his works.
To the astonishment of the other students, he encouraged her to continue drawing during lessons. He then took the liberty of sending her invitations to his gallery exhibitions. It was a revelation for her, as until then she had only known art through books.
Their exchanges became more frequent. She also became enthusiastically involved in the life of his gallery. Then one day, he revealed his pastel collection to her. The surprise was immense — discovering pastels for the first time outside of glossy paper. It was an aesthetic shock, but also a revelation: her teacher and mentor shared the same passion!
This bond grew over time into a deep love. Under his caring gaze, she fully developed her potential: she achieved excellence in her exams and won numerous professional awards, including Best Young Confectioner in Switzerland.
Throughout this beautiful story, he passed on to her his knowledge, his standards and his taste for beautiful things. Sadly, an incurable illness took him prematurely.
The time when I was that student now belongs to the past...
Today, I continue the adventure in these places imbued with the memory of the Isoz-Jegerlehner family, whose heritage is intimately linked to art and gastronomy.
At Isoz Chocolate, tradition does not stand still — it is passed on and reinvented, carried by passion, nourished by art, elevated by taste.
